We will be wecoming Ron Taylor to our meeting on Wednesday Jun 26th at 7.30pm when he will be giving us an insight into a journey between Broadlands and Spithead.
Our journey starts at Broadlands, the magnificent country house in Romsey, situated on the River Test. Broadlands, the ancestral home of the late 1st. Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Godfather of Prince Charles, and who was tragically murdered in Sligo, Republic of Ireland in August 1979.The river Test empties into Southampton Water at Redbridge. We pass Eling Creek and its ancient Mill, one of Europe’s largest container ports, the Military Port and the Isle of Wight ferry terminal. Then to Hythe and its wonderful pier railway, the historic Ocean terminal - home of the great liners of a past era, the Titanic to modern day cruise ships. We visit Hamble, and the Hampshire Police ‘town’ for training the police in riot control. Opposite we have Fawley Oil Refinery which provides 20% of all the UK’s oil needs. Into the Solent and opposite we have Cowes – the home of the world famous regatta, home of the invention of the Hovercraft. Finally into Spithead, the historic site of the Spithead review.
